The game emphasizes early and frequent upgrades to maximize efficiency. Initially, focusing on clicking multipliers can rapidly accelerate energy production. Afterward, one should concentrate on automatic energy generation upgrades, thus minimizing the need for constant clicking.

It is advised to pursue incremental upgrades that do not require too much saving, so progress is more continuous. Fast clicking is especially beneficial in the early stages, where it is the fastest method of gaining points. While any input method works, using a mouse is the most effective way to click rapidly. As soon as sufficient energy is reached, the player should move on from Earth to Mars which offers more abundant resources and upgrades. Mars should then be abandoned for Venus, the largest planet with the highest energy generation in Planet Clicker.

The game also has idle progression, so energy continues to be mined passively, even while the game is not actively being played. This idle progression makes it possible to return to the game with the potential to make significant improvements.
